How Often Should You Exfoliate?

Exfoliation is an incredibly important part of skincare; removing the outer layer of dead skin cells helps to refresh and revitalise our look, as well as avoid flaky skin and clogged pores.

It also stimulates the production of collagen, which helps skin look young and helps it to stay elastic.

There are many ways to exfoliate, from simple scrubs and masks to chemical treatments such as retinoids, however, it is important to know how much is too much when it comes to exfoliation.

There is no real right or wrong answer when it comes to exfoliation; how often you should do it depends on the product you are using.

For example, a gentle daily microfoliant may be suitable to use as part of your daily skincare routine, however more aggressive scrubs and peels can cause skin irritation if used too much.

Exfoliation strips the skin of its natural oils and barriers, leading to damage that can take some time to recover from.

If you have an oily skin type, your skin naturally has a better tolerance for exfoliation and you can use scrubs as often as you need to, whilst other skin types, especially sensitive skin may need to limit it to once or at most twice a week.

As well as this, try to avoid using body scrubs for your face, as many body scrubs use more aggressive ingredients and are more likely to cause irritation.

As for what time of day you should exfoliate, this all comes down to personal preference. Some prefer to exfoliate at night as it helps to remove makeup and dirt from the face, whilst other people like to exfoliate in the morning and have a youthful glow.
