How To Care For Your Under-Eye Area

Eye skincare can be a confusing topic, with a lot of contradictory advice floating around. Many of us have dark circles, puffiness, or fine lines we would like to tackle, but are not sure exactly how to go about it.

The skin under the eyes needs particular care because it is much thinner than the rest of your skin, on average 0.5mm thick compared to 2mm elsewhere. This makes it especially vulnerable to the effects of dehydration, allergies, poor sleep, UV light, and chemical products. They are often the first area of the face to show signs of age.

So, what is the best way to take care of this sensitive area? It starts with taking control of your overall health and lifestyle routine: getting a good night’s rest, and drinking plenty of water throughout the day, for a start. It is also advisable to apply a sun-blocking product to your under-eye area and wear sunglasses on bright sunny days.

For puffy eyes, a well-known natural remedy is to place fridge-cooled cucumber slices on your eyes for 15 minutes. Cucumbers are rich in vitamin C and folic acid, which contain anti-inflammatory properties and refresh the skin. For an extra dose of moisturiser and nutrients, gently massage an eye serum to the affected area.

Even if you do not have many lines and wrinkles around your eyes at the moment, a good skincare routine will help to prevent problems occurring later on. Make sure you always thoroughly cleanse the area to prevent build-up of dead skin cells, make-up and oils.

At night time, apply an eye cream designed to tackle signs of aging, such as one which contains retinol. Retinoids are a derivative of vitamin A, which speed up skin-cell turnover, leaving your skin looking brighter and firmer.
